Idiopathic

This category contains different factors whose nature is not understood or only partially understood.

Background diseases

Sometimes allergic-like symptoms may be an expression of a background disease:

In this category, we can divide the causes of allergic symptoms into two:

  • Infectious factors: in example allergic reactions may occur as a manifestation of activation of the immune system (which is the system responsible for allergic reactions, among other functions). This may happen during a viral disease. In this case the symptoms subside with the end of the infectious disease.
  • Abnormal activity of the immune system: Sometimes there are allergic-like reactions in the context of autoimmune diseases (in which the body attacks itself).

Insect stings

Allergy to the venom injected during the sting of a honey bee, hornet or wasp poses a significant risk among those persons allergic to these substances.

Less dangerous but very common insect sting allergies are, for example, allergies to mosquito bites, which may pose a significant health problem.

Causes of contact dermatitis

Different materials that come to contact with us may elicit allergic reactions in some persons, among them:

  • Latex (rubber), especially among health care workers who are long exposed to rubber in gloves.
  • Various metals, particularly nickel.
  • Fabrics and materials used in the textile industry.
  • Cosmetics, among them deodorants and makeup.
  • Hair dye, henna dye (tattoos).

Allergenic drugs

Drugs cause allergies in some persons and can cause life-threatening reactions. Among the common drugs responsible for allergic reactions:
Penicillins.
Aspirin and pain-killers from the NSAIDS group: such as ibuprofen.
Anti-epilepsy drugs.

However, in principle, any drug can cause allergic reactions.
